HISTORY OF DUNKWA AREA Teachers' CO-OPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LTD

In the early 1970s, some mission schools and tribal clans were operating welfare funds in the Upper Denkyira District (now Municipality). These were the Methodist welfare fund, Catholic welfare fund, Anona Welfare fund, Dargati Welfare fund, Ashanti Welfare fund and others. It was through these that, the local council of school Teachers' conceived the idea of forming a District Welfare. It was duly formed and operated for 12 months after which an idea was generated to change the welfare to a Credit Union in order to extend its services to a large number of people within the community. This led to the formation of the Dunkwa Area Teachers' Co-operative Credit Union (DATCCU).

Dunkwa Area Teachers' Co-operative Credit Union was formed in 1975 with a total membership of 63 under the leadership of Late Messrs C.K. Donkor, John Sarpey, J.K. Appukah, E.Y. Hagan, M.E. Aforo, D.K. Poku, Joseph Awotwi, Francis Onyilola, J.H. White and Dorothy Agyin. It was registered with the Department of Co-operatives in 1976 with registered number 4680. The first Board of Directors included Messrs Kwofie (Chairperson), C.K.Donkor (Vice), S.S. Boamah (Secretary), Nawortey (Treasurer) among others.

During all these periods, Dunkwa Area Teachers' Co-operative Credit Union was operated in people’s rooms and apartments. In 1995, the Credit Union Association of Ghana (CUA) organized a conference at Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana and spelt out the restructuring of Credit Unions which the then Chairman, Mr Appresse Charles and his vice Mr J.K. Kamuzu attended. The Board of Directors of the Union implemented the conference resolutions to the letter by looking for a permanent office, Manager and other administrative staff. This brought about the shift from a benevolent posture to one of the serious businesses in the District.

The Union has its maiden office located in an apartment at Upper Denkyira District Education Service’s Office. It was relocated to Boa-Amponsem Primary School on the orders of the Education Directorate. That office was used until 2003. In 1999, Dunkwa Area Teachers' Co-operative Credit Union acquired her own land for a permanent office complex project under the Chairmanship of Mr Charles Appresse.

The untiring effort of the next Board of Directors with Messrs. Francis Owusu Krah and the late Peter Baah-Aboagye as the chairman and manager respectively, the storey building office complex was completed in December 2002. The Union, on 8th February 2003 dedicated this building. Officiating personalities were Messrs. Charles Appresse and Emmanuel Oduro Darko, the General Manager of the Co-operative Credit Unions Association of Ghana (CUA) and the then Director of Education in the District respectively. The Union moved into the new office that same day and started operating from there till date as her main office.

Dunkwa Area Teachers' Co-operative Credit Union is the mother of Twifo Heman Lower Denkyira Co-operative Credit Union (THLDCCU) and Dunkwa Traders Co-operative Credit Union (DUNTACCU). The Union has managed itself well despite the deflection of the aforementioned Credit Union.

The decision to open the common bond of the Union was proposed by the Board of Directors and approved by members at the annual general meeting during the tenure of Joseph Amponsah Antwi as the Board Chairman in 2009. The decision paved way for the opening of WasaAkropong and Dunkwa Central Market branches in 2010, under the chairmanship of Mr David Oduro (Now Reverend Minister). The current Board under the Chairmanship of Mr Daniel Anakwa Ntow also shares the idea of their predecessors and has opened one additional branch at Diaso in 2012. In 2014, the Board of Directors acquired an ultra-modern edifice to be used as an office for the Diaso branch.

Dunkwa Area Teachers' Co-operative Credit Union (DATCCU) 1998 won the highest Central Finance Facility award from the Credit Unions Association of Ghana. The Union was also adjudged the largest, leading and best Credit Union in the Central Region of Ghana. In addition to the success story, Dunkwa Area Teachers' Co-operative Credit Union was ranked the 4th largest in Ghana in terms of asset base, out of 503 Co-operative Credit Unions.
